O Christmas Tree: Seasonal Singing Activities and Holiday Music

MORE than holiday repertoire

This collection is perfect for your intermediate singers. It’s got a mix of secular and sacred songs AND it has over 10 pages of activities that build musicianship skills and make excellent warm-ups.

Every activity encourages active listening:

  • comparing favourite Christmas song recordings
  • discovering familiar melodies through solfège, rhythms, and intervals
  • learning to add unique interpretation using rhythm and pitch variations
  • lyric discovery for expressive singing
  • exploring holiday harmonies

They’re all designed to help singers develop careful listening skills.

Eighth note clapping exercises and excerpts of rhythms from familiar songs

Exploring rhythms has never been so merry!

Familiar Christmas repertoire offers students a great opportunity to explore song rhythms and learn the nuances of swing eighth notes. (The FULL VOICE team loves our jazzy rhythms.)

We offer an exciting FREE sample of our rhythm discovery exercise from the book:

Jingle Bells Rhythmic Improvisation Study

This activity is guaranteed to encourage a fresh perspective on jazzy rhythms, and it’s a perfect introduction to improvisation and allowing students to create their own unique interpretation.

Exercises for adding melodic ornaments to a familiar phrase

Melodic ornamentation step-by-step

This book includes TWO pages of melodic ornaments, introduced with clear visuals using phrases from familiar Christmas songs.

Students will learn about:

  • grace notes
  • appogiaturas
  • passing notes
  • neighbour notes
  • slides

The learning activities are followed by the song Silent Night, presented as two versions:

  • a lead sheet with written ornaments for students to apply
  • a lead sheet with blank sections for students to choose, write, and sing their own ornaments

The O Christmas Tree Backing Tracks (available separately) include a BONUS band track for this activity. Students will love singing along to the beautiful, contemporary-style guitar accompaniment.
